Teen charged with cutting tail off pit bull

BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police in Bennington say a 19-year-old man cut the tail off a pit bull puppy.

Nineteen-year-old Jerry Crandall pleaded not guilty Wednesday to three counts of animal cruelty through deprivation and one count of animal cruelty through torture.

According to police Officer Anthony Silvestro, Crandall took three puppies from a litter of 12 and returned one to the owner - covered in blood - after he had apparently used a scissors to cut off the tail. In an affidavit, he said that dog and another puppy both died of dehydration and malnutrition while in Crandall's care.

Crandall, of Bennington, is also charged with petty larceny and resisting arrest. He was released without bail.
