NEWPORT, Vt. — Vermont State Police say they’ve charged a supervisor for the state Department for Children and Families with animal cruelty for allegedly trying to kill a rooster.

Thirty-six-year-old Suzanne Griesel, of Newport, is accused of throwing a brick at the family rooster, breaking its leg and causing a cut. Detective Sgt. Jacob Zorn says she did nothing to tend to the injuries afterward. The Burlington Free Press says the incident was reported June 20.

People of the Northeast Kingdom for Strays took the rooster to an animal hospital in Newport Center, where it is recovering.

Griesel has been cited into Lamoille Superior Court in Hyde Park on Sept. 28.
