Brick thrown at rooster leads to charge

By Jenna PizzI
EWPORT CENTER An employee of the Vermont Department for Children and Families has been charged with animal cruelty, according to police, after she allegedly threw a brick at a rooster.

Police began investigating an animal cruelty allegation against Suzanne Griesel, a 36-year-old Newport Center woman, on June 20. Griesel allegedly threw a brick at her rooster, attempting to kill it, but missed, officials said.

According to police, Griesel left the rooster uncared for despite its broken leg and a laceration on its upper leg.

On Monday, state police issued Griesel a citation to appear in Lamoille County Court on September 28 to answer to animal cruelty charges.

The rooster was taken to the Newport Veterinary Hospital by People of the Northeast Kingdom for Strays where it is recovering.
