ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) A Vermont farmer has been charged with cruelty after a heifer was found starved to death in his barn.

Twenty-eight-year-old Daniel G. Easterbrooks, of Lyndon, pleaded not guilty Monday to two counts of animal cruelty that were lodged after authorities said they found one heifer dead, another so ill it couldn't stand and a barn floor covered with manure and urine.

The Caledonian-Record reports that the farm was inspected March 4 by assistant state veterinarian Dr. Joel M. Russo and Jim Cameron, animal health field supervisor for the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, and that they found 40 adult cows and 20 heifers in the barn with no feed, no bedding and excessive manure and urine.
