AG files charges in slaughterhouse case
Montpelier, Vermont - June 4, 2010

Two men are facing animal cruelty charges for their roles at a Grand Isle slaughterhouse that shut down last fall.

The Vermont Attorney General's office says charges have been filed against 37-year-old Christopher Gaudette and 51-year-old Frank Perretta, both of Grand Isle.

The alleged abuse was made public after the Humane Society of the United States released undercover video that allegedly showed calves at the plant being excessively shocked prior to slaughter.

"We were really pleased, because with the changes being brought today, we thought it really showed that the citizens actions worked. That they did listen to the people of the state of vermont who believed that crimnal charges needed to be filed," said Deborah Loring with Green Mountain Animal Defender.

Bushway Packing recently reopened as Champlain Valley Meat Packing. The company agreed to improve conditions for the animals, train employees and undergo regular inspections.

Owners of the plant did not return phone calls.
