(Baxter County, AR) -- An Arkansas man, who skipped a sentencing date in 2006, is now behind bars.

44-year-old William Hanson was arrested in Johnson County, Missouri Tuesday morning. He was convicted of several counts of animal cruelty in 2006.

That's when authorities found nearly 600 abused dogs on Hanson's property near Mountain Home. The animals had been rescued during Hurricane Katrina, but Hanson was neglecting them.

It was considered the worst case of animal cruelty in the nation at the time. Hanson's wife, Tammy, was also convicted of animal cruelty and avoided her sentencing.

She was caught in mid-July in Vermont and is still fighting extradition back to Arkansas. William was briefly in custody there as well, until he fled to Missouri.

Authorities in Vermont say they found even more animals living in squalor when the couple was arrested. William Hanson's due in court on Wednesday in Johnson County.
