NEK woman charged over abandoned animals

The Associated Press

NEWPORT — An Irasburg woman says she’s innocent of animal cruelty charges lodged after abandoned animals were found dead and dying at her home.

Forty-one-year-old Tammy Turner pleaded not guilty Tuesday to four felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

On Dec. 24, authorities called to the home she shares with 77-year-old Rudolph Botala found dead goats, rabbits and chickens that had either starved or died of exposure. Police blamed Turner for the deaths of a beagle, chicken, rabbit and a goat.

According to Vermont State Police, Turner says she abandoned the animals after Botala became ill and had to be hospitalized.

If convicted, she could get three years in prison and a $5,000 fine on each count, the Caledonian-Record reported.
