Police Investigating Lost Bird as Cruelty Case

Posted on Apr 6, 2009 - 8:25 AM
Barre, Vermont - April 2, 2009

Barre City Police are investigating a case of alleged animal cruelty against a rare cockatoo.

We showed you the bird last week. It could chirp "hi there" but was found wandering in Central Vermont and no one knew where it lived. After our broadcast, Noah's Ark Pet Center, the pet store temporarily caring for the animal, says it got a call from a woman claiming a relative dumped the bird at a landfill because he was sick of its chirping.

The store would not return the bird to that house, and a man who helped rescue the pet has now adopted it.

Fred Ashworth of Noah's Ark Pet Center says, "The bird found itself a very nice home, which is basically all we really wish for all of the animals here: to have a good home, and have good care, and live a good life with friendly people."

Barre City Police say they have spoken with the woman who reported the bird was tossed. They hope to wrap up the investigation soon.
