Irasburg woman cited in animal cruelty case

IRASBURG -- A 40-year-old woman has been cited in connection with an animal cruelty case in which numerous dead and abandoned animals were discovered at a residence on West Glover Road in late December.

Vermont State Police said Tammy Turner is facing an animal cruelty charge. She is scheduled to appear in Vermont District Court on May 26.

Town selectmen checking on a report of animal neglect at 729 West Glover Rd. on Dec. 24 discovered a dead dog chained to an outside post; three dead goats; about five dead rabbits; and between 6 and 8 dead chickens. Goat fetuses also were found in a barn on the property, police said.

Several animals on the property were found alive, including horses, chickens, goats and dogs. Irasburg residents came together to find shelter and food for the animals, which had been released by their unidentified owner, police said.

An investigation has revealed that Turner moved from the residence, leaving the animals behind without food or shelter - several days before selectmen visited the property, police said this week.

Troopers said no one had been at the residence for about five days when the Irasburg selectmen visited the property, which has since been condemned by town officials.
