Thursday, October 16
BENNINGTON The following cases were heard in Bennington District Court on Tuesday:
Lucene Peirce, 75, of Chapel Road in Bennington, pleaded not guilty to a charge of animal cruelty.

According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Cpl. Christopher Lauzon, police were dispatched to the West Mountain Animal Hospital on Sept. 3 at around 1:37 p.m. on a report of a neglected dog.

Lauzon said he met with one of the employees, who showed him a female dog. According to Lauzon, the dog had long, matted hair, waste on its hindquarters and an infected eye. Lauzon learned the dog had been found near a construction site on Chapel Road.

Lauzon said he later received a letter from a veterinarian, claiming the dog was continuously in pain and suffered from ear infections and ulcerated skin. Lauzon said the dog also required surgery for a kidney problem.

Lauzon said he heard Peirce was the owner of the dog. He said he spoke to a neighbor who claimed she had seen a dog matching that description on her property a year ago.

Lauzon said police contacted Peirce's son. According to Lauzon, the son changed his story at first claiming the dog was missing, then saying he had found the dog two weeks ago.

Lauzon said he spoke to Peirce, who reportedly denied owning the dog.
